Maybe it’s a citrine, birthstone of November and an excellent match for the colors of autumn. Maybe it’s garnet, that cranberry hue tantalizing the taste buds. Maybe it’s amethyst, a stone long storied to prevent drunkenness, which could apply to both the abundance of libations and food this holiday.

For me—at least this year—it’s rose quartz. Why? It’s a refreshing pairing for those earthy colors that dress our bodies and tables this holiday, softening the darker palette. And speaking of refreshing pairing, it goes well with a glass of rosé, which is a beautiful accompaniment to turkey. (If you had just given up wine for nine months, you might be concerned with these things too).

But rose quartz also has a significance to Thanksgiving: Those who practice with crystals consider rose quartz to be a stone of gratitude, imperative to nurturing a thankful heart.

Whether one believes in the healing properties of rose quartz—it is storied to prevent heart attacks and thrombosis, protect mom and baby through the nine months of pregnancy, and heal both physical and emotional trauma—it’s easy to be persuaded by its soft and easy beauty. While I have it pegged as my preferred stone of Thanksgiving 2021, it’s a gem to be thankful for at all times.
